Winter ~ A Soft Arrival
A poem on the winter.
Slowly, as September and October
begin to gather their things,
November and December knocks
at the door with a quiet chill.
That harsh, prickling summer sunlight
one we can barely tolerate,
softens into a gentle comfort
as winter begins to settle within.
The clear morning light start
hides shyly behind a curtain of mist.
Days start growing shorter,
and nights stretch themselves
into long unfolding folders.
Soft flakes begin to fall,
whispering lightly as they touch the earth.
Blanketing the world in quiet white,
each step leaves a fleeting trace behind.
To escape the heavy darkness
and the biting cold of the night,
start sitting close to the flames of fire
as themselves seeking warmth.
The journey is never as long as summer’s
just a brief, dedicate feeling,
that lingers for a moment
before moving on quietly.
